3 Tips to Enhance Social Media Engagement During your Event

Events

Social media engagement is one of the many challenges an event planner faces. Are delegates on social media and if so, are they following us and more importantly, are they engaged in the conversation? What steps need to be taken to ensure attendees engage and share their experience?

The Québec City Convention Centre welcomed in June 2015 the Dietitians of Canada (DC) for their National Conference 2015. Their social media presence was so impressive that we asked Kate Comeau, Manager – Public Relations and Media for Dietitians of Canada, to share how she approached social media engagement. We summarized their efforts in three categories.

Here are three key steps for maximum social media engagement.

1- Education is key

Kate prepared three how-to videos. The videos showing how to use and engage on Twitter were shared on the DC’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

DC did not take for granted that attendees were on Twitter. Instead, they aimed at educating members to ensure they were prepared if willing to engage.

2- Use paper to spread your message

The keyword in social media is social. While the spread of your event hashtag starts online, it can surely gain momentum in the real world. Dietitians of Canada published the hashtag on all conference materials, including on a postcard distributed on conferences tables on day one of the event. Of course, eco-friendly materials are always a wise choice as is printing once at your destination to reduce shipping cost and greenhouse gas emissions generated by transportation.

3- Engage with everybody!

Not only did Kate engage with members attending the event and speakers, she also reached out to members missing the conference. This created a community among DC, attendees, people absent and speakers. The buzz for future DC events could then grow.
