I founded and sold a few businesses up until the early 2000s, mostly in the interactive digital content sector\u2014back when we were talking about floppy disks and CD-ROM software. With the rise of the Internet, business models changed, and I got involved in the industry through associations, particularly with the <em>Alliance num\u00e9rique<\/em>. I was already chairing boards in the early 2000s. Since 2002, I\u2019ve been supporting tech entrepreneurs in Qu\u00e9bec and in the French-speaking community around the world, helping them grow their markets and business strategies. I\u2019ve also led the <em>Fondation de l\u2019entrepreneurship<\/em> and the <em>R\u00e9seau Mentorat<\/em>, and was involved with the <em>Chambre de commerce et d\u2019industrie de Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>. My long-standing engagement in the Qu\u00e9bec City business community naturally led me to the Qu\u00e9bec City Convention Centre. It\u2019s incredibly fulfilling to contribute to our region\u2019s economic development.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-media-text\"><div class=\"container\" >\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 30%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>How long have you been President of our Board of Directors?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m now in my fifth year. My current term is set to end in October 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>How many members sit on the board?<br><strong><br>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>There are 11 members, including the CEO. Two Centre executives also attend the meetings\u2014the Board Secretary and the Director of Administration. It\u2019s a diverse group, which makes for a very dynamic environment.<br><br><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>How does one become a member of the Convention Centre\u2019s Board of Directors?<strong><br><\/strong><br><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>The Centre is a government corporation. Board members are appointed by the Cabinet based on recommendations from the Ministry of Tourism and the <em>Secr\u00e9tariat aux emplois sup\u00e9rieurs<\/em>. You can\u2019t just propose a replacement, you must apply through the appropriate official channels.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.convention.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alain-Aubut-2023-credits-Jonathan-Robert-400x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Alain Aubut, President of the Board of Directors of the Qu\u00e9bec City Convention Centre.\" class=\"wp-image-12791 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>What is the purpose of a board of directors in an organization like ours?<strong><br><\/strong><br><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>The board provides both guidance and governance. We oversee financial auditing, risk management, human resources, and governance and ethics, while also providing recommendations and input on various Centre projects. We have four committees:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-list component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Audit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human Resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Governance and Ethics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategies and Revenue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p>The last one was introduced by the new CEO and focuses on the future and new opportunities. The Centre\u2019s team regularly shares insights with us on emerging trends and development strategies.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div  class=\"item component-cta-banner component-no-padding\">\n    <section class=\"block-cta-banner   block-cta-banner--is-common block-cta-banner--is-dark\">\n        <div class=\"container\">\n            <div class=\"row\">\n                <div class=\"col-xs-12\">\n                    <div class=\"block-cta-banner__container\">\n                        <div class=\"block-cta-banner__content\">\n                                                        \n                                                            <div class=\"block-cta-banner__text\">\n                                    <p><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br \/>\nHow involved are you, and how much time does it require?<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br \/>\nGiven all the governance responsibilities we must meet for higher authorities, preparation is key. Personally, as President, I also sit on all the committees. Some weeks, this work and the meetings can take four to five hours. There\u2019s also an informal aspect involving representation and networking. It\u2019s not a public-facing role, but one that\u2019s highly connected politically and strategically.<\/p>\n                                <\/div>\n                            \n                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                    \n                                    <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><br><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>Is there a notable difference between the President\u2019s role and that of other board members in terms of responsibilities?<br><strong><br>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>The President doesn\u2019t work alone. Much of the work is handled within the individual committees. Each committee has its own chair who ensures follow-ups are done. Resolutions are then approved by the board.<br><br><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>Do you feel involved in the results achieved by the Qu\u00e9bec City Convention Centre\u2019s teams?<strong><br><\/strong><br><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>There\u2019s a line that shouldn\u2019t be crossed between governance and operations. One of my responsibilities, without being a <em>policeman<\/em>, is to maintain that balance. At the board, we ask questions to the executives, we stay informed, but we don\u2019t intervene directly in operations. That\u2019s the key to letting everyone fulfill their roles. Thankfully, the management team keeps us well informed so we can fulfill our role effectively.<br><br><strong>ANN CANTIN:<\/strong><br>What are you most proud of as President over the past five years?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph component-no-padding \" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>ALAIN AUBUT:<\/strong><br>The quality and dedication of our board members. I hold annual one-on-one meetings with each of them to gather more personal insights. I also invite an expert in governance every year to share knowledge and enrich our discussions. And of course, there are concrete achievements like hosting major events, such as the <em>Rendez-vous d\u2019affaires de la Francophonie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div  class=\"item wysiwyg
