The 2016 “Strawberry Olympics” will blossom in Québec City

Québec City, April 4, 2012 – Québec City has been selected by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) to host the 8th International Strawberry Symposium. Dubbed the “Strawberry Olympics,” the event will be held from August 14 to 17, 2016, at the Québec City Convention Center. It will be the first edition of the symposium to be staged in Canada, and the second in North America.
Québec City’s bid, which was approved by an overwhelming majority of the international scientists who attended the 2012 symposium in Beijing, China, from February 18 to 22, was skillfully championed by Yves Desjardins, an ISHS board member who is a full professor and researcher at Université Laval’s Centre de recherche en horticulture (CRH) and Institut des nutraceutiques et des aliments fonctionnels (INAF). Canada and Belgium were finalists.
His colleague, André Gosselin, a full professor in the Department of Plant Science at Université Laval and founder of CRH and co-founder of INAF, will help organize this landmark conference for the Québec City area, serving as organizing committee co-chair with Mr. Desjardins. The committee will include representatives from CRH, University of Guelph, Association des producteurs de fraises et de framboises du Québec (APFFQ), and Agriculture Canada.
Held every four years since 1988, the International Strawberry Symposium brings together nearly 1,000 experts from around the globe, including researchers, producers, propagators, academics, and business people who attend sessions on the latest developments in the global strawberry industry. The symposium provides the opportunity to share information on agricultural technology and sow the seeds of international collaboration. After Italy, the U.S., Netherlands, Finland, Australia, Spain, and China, it is Québec City’s turn to welcome these leading specialists.
The province of Québec is Canada’s largest strawberry producer; together with Ontario, it is the third-largest producer in North America after Florida and California. Seven hundred growers sell the fruits of their labor during a four-month season from early June to mid-October.
